After his return from meritorious military service in Southeast Asia, Gary attended the University of Oregon. Â • Studied with John Wisdom, former Chair of Philosophy at Cambridge University, Great Britain, prior to coming stateside to the University of Oregon. Professor Wisdom taught about himself in third person critiquing his own work, sharing personal stories about Bertrand Russell, A.J. Ayer, Wittgenstein, and other philosophical notables. Gary met with Professor Wisdom at his home every Wednesday afternoon for several years, where Mrs. Wisdom would prepare a cozy of tea. These were Oxbridge-style Individual tutorial sessions.
• While at the University of Oregon, Gary became friends with Ken Kesey, author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Two more politically diverse people you’d never meet than Ken, liberal. If not radical, (see Tom Wolfes’ Electric Kool-aid Acid Test) and Gary, conservative. Two things Gary learned from Ken: 1) You will never learn anything new from people with whom you already agree. 2) There is no threat in the marketplace of ideas. However discordant ideas may be, reasonable people should be able to discuss anything and remain on friendly terms. Ken gave Gary the sobriquet of ‘Republican Hippie,’ a term he cherishes to this day. Â • After graduation, he entered employment with the Department of Defense, Trained as a Management Analyst; with promotions to Senior Analyst, and later Division Manager; at Sacramento Army Depot, conducting studies, reviews, audits, and analyses of government operations.
• Gary developed a love for theatre as well; performed King Lear, with Sacramento City College, 1776, with The Music Circus, Sacramento, Oliver, at California State University Sacramento, and Cherry Orchard, at The Sacramento Civic Theatre, directed by Vincent Dowling, from The Great Lakes Shakespearean Company, with then 19-year-old, Tom Hanks.
• Leaving Federal service, Gary earned his Masters in Fine Arts in Performance from University of Washington, Seattle, Washington. Â • An Actors’ Equity Fellowship to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, (RADA), London, England, for two years lead to other performing, directing, and teaching opportunities; 4 years at The Conservatoire Nationale Superioure d’art Dramatic, University of Paris, France, 2 years at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, University of Milan, Italy, and finally at The National Theatre, London, working with Peter Hall; a total of ten years in Europe. Â • For his career has performed in one hundred and twenty-eight productions to date in the Western United States, Canada, France, Italy, and Great Britain; Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle, Washington, Oregon Shakespearean Festival, Ashland, Oregon, at one time belonging to Actor’s Equity, Screen Actors’ Guild, and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists
• He is also a writer having published numerous literary articles: Kvetcher in the Wry, Angst for the memories, Odd Fish, and is author of Heathers’ Child, Damons’ Code, Here, There Be Dragons, and authored the one-act play,” So There I Was.” Â • Now comfortably retired from performing, though called upon to direct productions in Canada and the U.S., living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, an area of the world with which he became particularly fond while stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, during military service.
